In part:The University of Nebraska Press has undertaken a huge series that I have been paying close attention to over the past year - the Outward Odyssey Series, which examines the human endeavors into outer space. The latest installment, Homesteading Space turns to a relatively unknown element, but crucial element of our trips to orbit, Skylab. Like the prior books, Into that Silent Sea, In the Shadow of the Moon and To A Distant Day, we are not only treated to a wealth of information about the technical aspects of the program, but the implications and human element of it.
The other fun thing I've encountered lately is that my Google Alerts feed is starting to show me, basically randomly, online library catalogs that list the book. Very cool to see people actually checking it out of their local library. It's like it's a real book or something. Yeah, that's my book, for sale, on a shelf, at a bookstore ...
... at the Smithsonian.
Cool, no? Just unbelievable to me. I've been so blessed this year, it's unreal. It's very flattering; a few excerpts:This book is the inspirational account of the three Skylab missions flown in 1973-74 that provided the key to U.S. space activities that followed the highly productive program. ... The experiences of the crews amassed led to a treasure trove of scientific knowledge that is as yet unmatched by even the International Space Station.
...
The scientific and technological brilliance and love of adventure of all the Skylab astronauts was remarkable, and that’s amply attested to in the lively narrative.
...
Profiles of each of the crew members and the stories they tell in their own words read like a good space novel. Anecdotal, revealing and often wryly humorous, this is a tale no one else could have told for them.
...
After the third mission, Skylab was set to burn up on re-entry. The discussion and planning for its re-entry will keep the reader spellbound, even though we know the denouement. space="7" vspace="7">There's a brief blurb about Homesteading in the January 2009 issue of the Smithsonian's Air & Space magazine, but it seems to be only in the print edition, not the online edition.
From the blog of Ares wordsmith, prolific space writer, space policy guru and all-around great guy Bart Leahy:I'm finishing up my review of Homesteading Space right now. It'll appear in the next edition of Ad Astra. For now, all I can recommend is that you don't walk, but run to the nearest book store or online book vendor and see what you can do about adding this to your favorite space geek's book collection--and get one for yourself.I know nothing about this place, so I can't vouch for it, but a site called HotBookSale is selling Homesteading for less than $15, including shipping. Frankly, makes me wonder if the business name is accurate. Enterprise?
Well, wonder no more. Armstrong was among several astronauts and mission control veterans of Apollo to visit the San Diego Air & Space Museum recently, which is currently hosting the traveling Star Trek exhibition. The combination was an opportunity too good to pass up, and photos of the visit have been posted on the collectSPACE Web site. Scroll down toward the end to see them.
