Systems of mixed-signal simulation became widespreading in design of electronic systems. Necessity of their usage is stipulated by
the following reasons:
today's electronic systems contains both digital and analogue blocks;
sizes, complexity and speed of data processing of these systems have considerably grown
for the last 10 years. Pure digital simulation is not capable to cope with such
information volumes. It is necessary to simulate a part of the system at a behavioural
level.
One of the problem of mixed-signal simulation is how jointly to describe
different parts of a project (digital, analog, behavioural, mechanical, etc.), using
whenever possible close constructions of the language? VHDL-AMS is one of the solutions
this problem. VHDL-AMS is a hardware description language supporting the description and
simulation of digital, analog, and mixed-signal systems in a single language. This
language has been approved as IEEE Standard 1076.1-1999 on March 18,1999 and available
from the IEEE Standards web site.
The VHDL-AMS allows to describe the analog models as systems of algebraic,
ordinary differential and integral equations. The typical process of such model
preparation includes the following stages:
"Invention" of a device mathematical model;
Coding of a mathematical model by the HDL language;
Debugging and testing of the HDL code;
Definition of the model parameters.
If the first stage of this process ("Invention" of a mathematical model) can
be automated for special cases only, for example, for linear devices, then the other
stages require the use of special software.
The AMSWizard just is such tool permitting to simplify process of creation of a
mathematical model in the VHDL-AMS language and to execute a debugging, testing and set-up
of model parameters for the analog or digital-analog device operatively. A result of its
work is the text file containing VHDL-AMS code of the model and also files with results of
its testing.
