Department of Environmental Medicine New York University School of Medicine and Nelson Institute of Environmental Medicine 
Founded in 1947, the Department of Environmental Medicine at New York University School of Medicine is one of the nation's oldest and foremost centers for research into the health effects of environmental pollution. The Deptarment. of Environmental Medicine is both a department in the NYU School of Medicine and an institute within NYU Medical Center. It has two major research and teaching facilities: one on the Medical Center's Manhattan campus, and the other in Tuxedo (Sterling Forest), New York, about 50 miles northwest of the city. Its faculty has expertise in a wide range of environmental problems. The Sterling Forest facilities (shown in the photo above) encompass about 72,000 square feet of lab, teaching, and office space. Its in-house research equipment includes one of the largest inhalation facilities in the country, a whole-body radiation counter, and many other state-of-the-art instruments.
