Title:From Newton's Laws to the Wheeler-DeWitt Equation

Authors:John W. Norbury(Submitted on 1 Jun 1998 (v1), last revised 2 Jun 1998 (this version, v2))Abstract: This is a pedagogical paper which explains some ideas in cosmology at a levelaccessible to undergraduate students. It does not use general relativity, butuses the ideas of Newtonian cosmology worked out by Milne and McCrea. Thecosmological constant is also introduced within a Newtonian framework.Following standard quantization procedures the Wheeler-DeWitt equation in theminisuperspace approximation is derived for empty and non-empty universes.Comments:13 pages, 1 figureSubjects:Physics Education (physics.ed-ph); General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology (gr-qc)Journal reference:European Journal of Physics, vol. 19, pg. 143-150 (1998)Report number:WISC-MILW-98-TH-17Cite as:arXiv:physics/9806004v2 [physics.ed-ph]
