General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology

Title:Dynamical Systems in Cosmology

Authors:A. A. Coley (Dalhousie University)(Submitted on 21 Oct 1999)Abstract: Dynamical systems theory is especially well-suited for determining thepossible asymptotic states (at both early and late times) of cosmologicalmodels, particularly when the governing equations are a finite system ofautonomous ordinary differential equations. We begin with a brief review ofdynamical systems theory. We then discuss cosmological models as dynamicalsystems and point out the important role of self-similar models. We review theasymptotic properties of spatially homogeneous perfect fluid models in generalrelativity. We then discuss some results concerning scalar field models with anexponential potential (both with and without barotropic matter). Finally, wediscuss some isotropic cosmological models derived from the string effectiveaction.Comments:38 pages. To appear in Proceedings of ERE-99Subjects:General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology (gr-qc); Astrophysics (astro-ph)Cite as:arXiv:gr-qc/9910074v1
