Maths-Education Info Page Maths-Education -- Mathematics Education discussion forum   About Maths-Education English (USA) What and who the list is for This forum is especially set up for those working in mathematics education. It is intended to act as a means of sharing ideas and experiences, request for information, and so on. Other possibilities include: Job opportunities Notification of courses Book/resource reviews International awareness Remember that this list is intended for an audience who active in research and teaching in mathematics education. There are other lists serving other purposes in mathematics education. (See below) It is possible too that reports of research and development work might be circulated too if this is thought to have interest for the intended audience. Some basic information This forum - otherwise called a listserver, is an automatic mailing system where individuals - like yourself - subscribe and then are able to send and receive messages to others also on the list. You can send messages to everyone on the list (even without knowing who they are!), or to named individuals. Some technical information In order to get onto the list, use the form headed Subscribing to Maths-Education below on this Web page http://lists.nottingham.ac.uk/mailman/listinfo/maths-education. If you are getting this the chances are you have already done this, though! This list has an open subscription policy, which means that all subscription requests are automatically agreed by the software managing the list. If at any time you wish to leave the list use the form below headed Maths-Education Subscribers. Messages should be sent to maths-education@nottingham.ac.uk. If you do this EVERYONE on the list gets your message. Currently there are around 300 individuals. This is very important. One of the most frustrating things for users of email lists is getting `junk mail' meant for an individual. Once, in the USA, a very embarrassing message of undying love was sent to a list rather than the individual concerned! BE WARNED, failure to follow this could result in a dramatic career break at the least! You must check the REPLY line in any message you send. If a message is sent to the list and you wish to reply, just REPLYing will send it to everyone on the list. If you wish to reply to just the sender you will need to change the REPLY line to just their address. Constant failure to do this will mean you will be gently warned and then removed from the list by the list owner. I am the list owner and I can be contacted either at maths-education-admin@nottingham.ac.uk or more personally peter.gates@nottingham.ac.uk. Being the list owner gives me the power to add and remove individuals from the list. If anything goes wrong, or messages get lost, I get to hear of it. If at anytime you want to know who is on the list, use the form below headed Maths-Education Subscribers. Be warned that this isn't always helpful as you may be told that someone is re2005t@emstf.org.plf.za (That isn't anyone - I just made it up. But many addresses are like that). You may be able to have an `alias' set up for yourself. For example my own address is tezpga@unix.ccc.nottingham.ac.uk but my `alias' of peter.gates@nottingham.ac.uk is much more helpful! Check with your technical support staff. Please make sure that you do not have your system set up to send out automatic confirmation of receipts of any message you send. This is often useful if you want to be told when someone has opened the message you sent them. however, what happens on a listserver is that you send a message to the list, everyone reads it, and automatically without knowing it, sends a message back saying that your message has been read. The problem is - everyone gets these messages. This is very annoying. You can work out what might happen if there are 100 people on the list... If someone does do this you get a message with a subject line something like RCPT:. . . It is wise to ignore and delete any such message as all they will tell you is that someone has opened someone else's message. It seems that this only happens to those of you using Pegasus Mail. If you use such a system or are not sure whether you do, please check with your technical support staff. Please append to the end of your messages your `signature'. In many cases this is the only way some can identify you personally. My `signature' is at the end of this file and you may wish to use something similar. List etiquette One needs to remember here that the listserver is a very powerful means of communication. Quite likely you will be able to converse directly and easily with others from many countries around the world as well as all over the UK. Messages should go to the whole list if they are of general interest, a general request or a contribution to an ongoing discussion. Otherwise send them to the individual concerned. PLEASE do not include all or any of the original message in your reply unless it is absolutely necessary for readers to remember what the issues are. This is a professional list and list members are expected to remain polite and not to indulge in personal attacks or insults. The list is not intended for advertisements seeking financial profit. Anyone who wished to publicise materials should first contact the list owner at maths-education-admin@nottingham.ac.uk It is possible that the list might have a high volume of traffic. It is therefore in everyone's interest that valuable time is not wasted having to read many messages which are not relevant or of interest to you. Consequently messages ought to have a clear and unambiguous subject line which will help members to decide if the message is of interest to them. You might want to consider such lines as: Request for information on research on maths and dyslexia Ideas for Pythagoras' TheoremIf you reply to a message the subject line will be the same as the original message with "RE:" added to the beginning. Some international codes You will no doubt be communicating with others from across the world. Email addresses usually end with a national code. e.g. nottingham.ac.uk.
