Drawing on her long experience as a teacher, curriculum developer and consultant, Barbara Ball makes use of her extensive contacts to bring together an excellent team of workshop facilitators. Barbara will introduce this half-day conference on creativity in maths aimed at teachers working at KS2 and 3. Institute of Education, University of Reading Saturday 15th November 2008, 9.00am - 1pm. Bowland Maths logo The Mathematical Association logo ATM Logo Bowland Maths Regional Conferences   The Mathematical Association and Association of Teachers of Mathematics have jointly designed a one-day event for secondary Mathematics advisors, Consultants and Advanced Skills Teachers to provide a hands-on introduction to both the Bowland lesson resources and the accompanying professional development materials for key stage 3 mathematics teachers. These conferences are aimed at the coordinators of professional development for mathematics teachers and will equip delegates with an adaptable toolkit of professional development resources to tailor to meet the local need. It is anticipated that this will support an active "cascade" model of local activity to widely disseminate both the aims and content of the Bowland Maths DVD. Over 170 delegates attended these events and they were very highly evaluated with comments such as "the discussions about pedagogy were fascinating and thought provoking - this was an important intro to looking at the materials" and "there was a good structure to the day - placing the new resource in the context of teacher development." Please contact your NCETM regional coordinator for further information about organising Bowland PD events for key stage 3 mathematics teachers in your region. www.ncetm.org.uk The Mathematical Association logo Secondary Education Mathematics Conference, run by The Mathematical Association hosted by Stirling University Saturday, 20th September 2008   To read the report on the conference, please click here. The Marches Network The Marches Network (formerly "Mathematics in the Marches")   This is the new name for the Marches ATM branch, because we are now much more than an ATM branch. The organising committee comprises representatives of both the ATM and MA, five mathematics consultants from local LEAs, three initial teacher training tutors and local teachers. The NCETM is also represented on the committee, because we are delighted to report that we have received a grant of £1000 from the NCETM. This will be used to cover travel expenses for our workshop leaders and expenses related to providing a venue and refreshments for our meetings. We shall still need to charge a small entrance fee in order to cover our costs. The next meeting will be on the morning of Saturday 4th October 2008 in Telford. There will be a choice of workshops suitable for primary and secondary teachers on the theme of Mathematical Creativity. If you would like to know more about The Marches Network or know someone who wants to be added to the mailing list please contact Barbara Ball at barbara@ludlowballs.force9.co.uk.
