August 2008 (arrival at Humboldt University Berlin) Course organized by Humboldt University of Berlin, Faculty of Agriculture and Horticulture, Department of Agricultural Economics and Social SciencesAgricultural University of Nitra BackgroundThe Marie Curie Project on Modern Agriculture in Central Europe (MACE) offers a workshop on: “Institutional Analysis - Applying Theories and Practicing Methodologies” organised by the Division of Resource Economics, Humboldt University Berlin. The aim of the workshop is to translate institutional economics to selected problems of resource management and agriculture in Central and Eastern Europe. Institutional economics diverts from the assumption that actors act rationally and that they have complete information at their disposal when they evaluate different pathways of actions. In consequence, institutions emerge and structure people’ interactions, respectively, operate as coping strategies to deal with information deficits and imperfect rationality. Against this background the course evaluates how a variety of approaches rooted in a broad conception of institutional economics can be used to analyse selected issues in agriculture and resource exploitation. It starts out from the need for a plurisdisciplinary approach in order to do justice to the complexity of social-ecological interrelations which can be observed in agriculture and resource use. In this formulation, science should strive to cross disciplinary boundaries, and become the product of a complex and recursive relationship between ‘experts’, policy-makers and others likely to have a stake in the policy formulation or its consequences, and to provide additional evidence to support it. It is claimed such an approach will increase transparency in regulatory processes and assist with better responding to the wicked issue in question. As such, the ‘science’ in PNS is not limited to a conventional understanding of the word, but refers to many different forms of evidence, knowledge and data.
