Ptacek Professor Department of Earth Sciences University of Waterloo Ph.D. University of Waterloo, 1992 LINKS TO AREAS OF RESEARCH Mine Waste Geochemistry Permeable Reactive Barriers Inorganics In the Subsurface Reactive Transport Modelling   Introduction to Our Research Group      Our research group focuses on the fate, transport and remediation of dissolved metals, metalloids and nutrients in groundwater. This research includes detailed field investigations, laboratory studies, development of reactive barriers and other passive remedial solutions, and development of mathematical models to predict the complex geochemical behavior of these systems. We have conducted detailed investigations of mine sites, mine-waste disposal facilities, wetlands, on-site sewage disposal systems and other industrial sites. Laboratory studies often focus on reaction mechanisms utilizing batch and column experiments. Mathematical modelling has focused on the development of fully-coupled reactive transport codes that can account for thermodynamic and kinetic controls on chemical reactions between groundwater and the aquifer material. Remediation research is focused on the development of passive, in situ, methods including permeable reactive barriers.      Our research is done at all levels of study: B.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D. and Post Doctoral.
