Wild-collected at 1930 meters elevation in Yunnan province, China by H. Li (Li #11621), a gift from Bian Tan of the San Francisco Botanical Garden and Quarryhill Board Member Bruce Bartholomew. This evergreen, bushy magnolia grows to a height of 4 meters as a broad, spreading, multi-stemmed shrub or small- to medium-sized tree, with thick, leathery, ovate-shaped leaves having a glaucous, tomentose underside. Very large (up to 18 cm across), fragrant, cup-like flowers bloom April through June (later in cooler climates) for only a few hours, fully open only at night, displaying pale green and creamy-white tepals with numerous sharp, triangular stamens. Fruits are in reddish, ovoid aggregates, 9-15 cm long. Endemic to Guizhou, Sichuan and Yunnan provinces in south-central China between 1500 and 2800 meters. Adaptable to rich or chalky, shallow soils (as in a wall planting) and moderately hardy, to -14 C. Ernest Wilson first introduced this species to the West, from Yunnan, in 1899.
