The Nationaal Herbarium Nederland (NHN)

An institute for systematic botany of the universities of Leiden, Utrecht and Wageningen (The Netherlands)

Core institute of the National Research School Biodiversity Partner in NLBIF The Nationaal Herbarium Nederland (National Herbarium of the Netherlands, NHN) was established in 1999 as the decentral merger of three major university herbaria in Leiden (L, better known as the Rijksherbarium), Utrecht (U) and Wageningen (WAG, Herbarium Vadense): decentral to safeguard the training of students in systematic botany at these three universities with broad training programmes in "green" biology ; merged to optimise co-operation in research, training and collection management, and to better comply with demands to underpin (inter)national policies on conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. The training of taxonomists and herbarium curators from developing countries is considered a major task in this respect. With a collection of close to over 5.5 million specimens, the NHN is one of the largest herbaria in the world. All ca. 50,000 type-specimens have been made available on internet. The three libraries of the NHN are a unique resource covering botanical and mycological literature from the 16th century to the present. Branches Leiden Utrecht Wageningen The Universiteit Leiden Branch The Universiteit Leiden branch of the NHN was founded as the Rijksherbarium in 1829 by Royal Decree of King William I. It now houses a collection of about 4.1 plant million specimens, including an extensive wood and liquid-preserved collection, and is the custodian of some of the earliest European and tropical herbaria of the 16ths and 17th century, and extensive icones collection and unique botanical library. The research and teaching programme is carried out by two project groups: Plants of the IndoPacific Area (PITA) The research group Plants of the Indopacific (PITA) brings together the research on the vascular plants of the Malesian region. The immense, and very incompletely known diversity of flowering plants and ferns of the Malesian region (Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Singapore and Brunei Darussalam) and adjacent Thailand and Indochina is central to the programme of this research group. It co-ordinates the international Flora Malesiana project, a first scientific inventory of about 42,000 flowering plants and ferns carried out by a voluntary network of over 120 taxonomists all over the world, and all major herbaria in the Malesian region. Selected species-rich genera from widespread families (currently Annonaceae, Cucurbitaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Leguminosae, Orchidaceae, Poaceae, Urticaceae and various Pteridophytes) are singled out for semi-monographic, phylogenetic and biogeographical analysis, using macromorphology, characters from pollen, leaf and wood anatomy, and DNA sequences. The historical biogeography of the Malesian archipelago with its complex geological history and mixture of gondwanic and laurasian flora elements is also a focus of study. The group works closely together with the MOFEC-Tropenbos programme in East Kalimantan to provide user-friendly field guides to primary and secondary forest tree species and develop biodiversity indicators for disturbance and regeneration. The ethnobotany and vegetation of Papua (Irian Jaya) is studied in the framework of the interdisciplinary ISIR programme. Electronic user-friendly identification tools are developed together with ETI (Amsterdam) in the form of interactive CD-ROMs on major Malesian plant families such as Orchidaceae and Leguminosae. Phanerogams and Cryptogams of the Netherlands and Europe (PCNE) This research group combines specialists for the systematic study of flowering plants, algae, mosses and fungi with emphasis on European taxa. The Flora of the Netherlands is continuously updated, and jointly with the in-house Foundation FLORON a database of over eight million plant records covering the last century is maintained. This database (FLORBASE) is used to study the effects of anthropogenic factors and climate change on the wild flora. Freshwater and marine algae, of immense importance for the quality of our environment, are the subject of detailed systematic, floristic, and phylogenetic research using microscopic, ultrastructural and molecular markers. Their potential role as indicators of ecosystem biodiversity is also studied. The Macrofungi of the Netherlands are subject of a critical taxonomic study in the long-term project on the Flora agaricina neerlandica. Selected groups are singled out for in-depth phylogenetic and population biological research using morphology, DNA sequences and AFLPs. Although currently lacking bryological staff, the wealth of floristic information associated with the moss collections are made accessible by the group to outside users for environmental monitoring. The Utrecht University branch The Utrecht University herbarium dates back to 1816. At present the collections include over 800,000 herbarium specimens and 40,000 wood samples, mainly from tropical America (the Neotropics).  The Board of Utrecht University have decided to close the Utrecht Herbarium in 2008, making the research facility inaccessible to researchers. The management of the National Herbarium Nederland has issued an official statement on this decision. Until its closure, the Utrecht University herbarium housed two long-term research projects: The Annonaceae Project, and The Flora of the Guianas Project. The Annonaceae Project The Annonaceae or soursop family constitute a large pantropical family of about 120 genera with over 2,500 species of trees, shrubs and lianas, and is studied by an international multidisciplinary team, co-ordinated by the Utrecht branch of the NHN, through the Annonaceae Newsletter and bi- to triannual workshops. The work of the Utrecht team focuses on monographic and phylogenetic research of selected genera, a phylogenetic analysis of the family using morphological characters and DNA sequences, the compilation and updating of bibliographical and nomenclatural data, and dissemination of floristic and biogeographical information through CD-ROMs (in co-operation with ETI-Amsterdam) and Internet. The Flora of the Guianas The Flora of the Guianas Project covers the geographical area of Guyana, Suriname, and French Guyana and is well known for its high biodiversity, with over 8,000 species of flowering plants. Studies by Utrecht staff members on several families, e.g., Bromeliaceae, Caryocaraceae, Euphorbiaceae, Gentianaceae, and Piperaceae are in progress. Wood anatomical studies form an integrated part of the treatments of woody families. The Flora of the Guianas Project is a co-operative project of institutions in ten different countries. The Editorial Office is housed in the Utrecht Herbarium. In co-operation with the Tropenbos Foundation the forest biodiversity in Guyana is studied, and the impact of logging on its species richness analysed. Another applied project deals with the use of Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFP) by Amerindians in the North-West Districts of Guyana. The Wageningen University Branch The year 1896 can be seen as the foundation date of the Herbarium Vadense, now the Wageningen University branch of the National Herbarium, although substantial herbarium collections were already present in Wageningen before that date. The collections are focused on the flora of tropical Africa, and on cultivated plants and their wild relatives, and consist of approximately 800,000 specimens, supplemented by about 20,000 liquid-preserved specimens and 5000 wood samples, numerous botanical illustrations and a specialised library. The research programme includes taxonomic and phylogenetic and biogeographical research of selected African plant families (Apocynaceae, Begoniaceae, Caesalpinoideae, Dracaena), contributions to floras, economic botany, and the (bio)systematics of cultivated plants and their wild relatives (especially Solanum and Lactuca), using morphological, cytological data, DNA sequences and AFLPs. The herbarium plays a major role in several international projects in various African countries and supports various projects of the Tropenbos Foundation. Since 1980 there is a strong link with the National Herbarium of Gabon, focused on the training of scientific and technical personnel and the improvement of the collection management in Gabon. The ECOSYN project is carried out jointly with the Department of Forestry of Wageningen University, and will produce lists of rare and endangered species, an ecological atlas, a field guide and a manual for ecological management of the forests of Tropical West Africa. The Flora of Benin project aims at providing a good National Herbarium to contain 40,000 specimens and issuing an analytical flora. The PROSEA foundation, a co-operative programme between Wageningen University and a number of Southeast Asian countries has almost completed a unique multivolume handbook and a comprehensive database on all presently known information on the plant resources of Southeast Asia. A project with the same concept has meanwhile been initiated for Tropical Africa (PROTA). Gardens The NHN works closely together with the botanical gardens of the three participating universities, which in turn harbour a wealth of living specimens of over 30,000 species, including very large vouchered research collections. Mission Statement

The mission of the Nationaal Herbarium Nederland is to generate, provide access to, and transfer knowledge on the nature, extent and origin of botanical diversity of our planet, making use of its extensive herbarium collections and associated information. It thus helps to provide a comparative base for all botanical sciences and to contribute to the conservation and sustainable use of natural resources.

Research themes and research plan

The immense and largely poorly known botanical diversity of our planet requires a broad, multifaceted, yet clearly prioritised approach. The research programme NHN fully complies with the priorities recognised by the international community (Diversitas, Systematics Agenda 2000, Global Taxonomy Initiative of the Convention of Biological Diversity) and the National Research School Biodiversity and addresses the following major themes: taxonomy of important groups of plants and macrofungi (for regional and world monographs, regional floras, etc.) biodiversity assessments (based on herbarium data, field inventories, and monitoring of floristic change) phylogeny and biogeography (using morphological, anatomical and molecular attributes and cladistic analysis) speciation and population differentiation management and dissemination of taxic biodiversity information (in user-friendly electronic form and hard copy, and fully exploiting the wealth of information linked with collections, and scattered in the specialised literature) The official Research plan for the current period (2004-2008) is available as a PDF-file.
