PLECS - Piece-wise Linear Electrical Circuit Simulation for SimulinkPLECS is a unique tool for the fast and accurate simulation of controlled power electronics systems within the Simulink environment. Power semiconductors are modeled as ideal switches that change instantaneouslybetween true short-circuit and open circuit. The use of ideal switches and the intuitive schematic editor make PLECS especially suited for power electronics courses. A student version with limited model size can be downloaded for free. PSIMPSIM is a simulation package specifically designed for power electronics and motor control. PSIM provides fast simulation and friendly user interface. The basic PSIM package consists of three programs: circuit schematic program, PSIM Simulator, and waveform display program SIMVIEW.In addition, there are three add-on modules for PSIM: Motor Drive Module for motor drives, Digital Control Module for discrete systems and digital control, and SimCoupler Module for co-simulation with Matlab/Simulink. Mona & LisaMona is a symbolic circuit analyzer. Lisa is a program for Control Systems and uses the concept of symbolic computation to the task of 'Bode/Root Locus/Time' analysis and design. A unique feature of Lisa is its capability to allow users to reshape plots graphically via draggable points and the program will automatically keep track of symbolic equations. Mona & Lisa are based on a Computer Algebra System (CAS) called 'Formulae 1'. As an example, one can use Formulae 1 to solve an integral and find out exactly how that integral was solved. All products were designed to run on Handheld devices such as PocketPC, Sharp Zaurus and SonyEricsson P800 but also on any PC running Windows, MacOS or Linux because they have been written in Java. Problem-Based TeachingSolar Car RaceProf. Duke and Prof. Round of the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand, are running a course in the 4th year of the undergraduate program where student teams (two members each) have to design, build and optimize the power converter of a small solar car. Finally, the solar cars compete in a race. Students build their own Switched Mode Power SuppliesProf. van der Broeck describes the approach he is running at the FH Köln. He established labwork in "switched mode power supplies" for students as a supplement to the lecture. The aim of the labwork is to make power electronics more attractive to students, especially to those who originally preferred non power related subjects.
