A tragic event occurred last Monday when four farm family members and one farmhand died from manure pit gas in Virginia. Scott Showalter, 34, was the first to succumb to the gas when he climbed into a 9-foot-deep manure pit to fix a clogged drain. When a farmhand nearby saw what had happened, he thought Scott may have suffered a heart attack, so he followed into the pit and also passed out. Then, Phyllis, Scott's wife, and two of their four children, also tried a rescue attempt, but they too fell victim to the deadly gas. Now the two remaining children and the farm are being taken care of by family members and friends. View article here.
