Autonomous Micro-Power Sources
Remarkable advances have taken place in the ability to construct electronic devices, sensors, and even mechanical systems at the micro scale. However, the implementation of some of these new concepts is hampered by the lack of an appropriately sized power source. This issue considers several aspects of providing a long-lasting power source in a very small volume. In the present issue of Interface, guest edited by Esther Takeuchi, we present information about systems at various levels of maturity. The PRiME 2008 Special Meeting Section highlights the special speakers and award winners at the upcoming meeting in Hawaii. Editor Krishnan Rajeshwar reflects on “Competing (Collaborating?) in the Science & Technology Space” and A. K. Shukla and T. Prem Kumar take us on an in-depth tour of the Pillars of Electrochemistry.

What's New
ECS Executive Director Roque Calvo wrote about the upcoming PRiME 2008, our fifth Joint International Meeting with The Electrochemical Society of Japan (ECSJ). The meeting also has the technical co-sponsorship of four other international societies (JSAP, KECS, RACI, and CSE). The combination of these scientific communities produces a collaborative program that provides scientists from all over the globe with unique opportunities to advance electrochemical and solid-state science and technology. Beginning with the first joint international meeting in 1987, the meeting’s success has far exceeded the original expectations. This 2008 meeting program includes 53 topics and 3,237 papers, which is certainly the largest program ever held on electrochemistry.

ECS offers a number of Fellowships and the deadlines are coming up (January 1 for the 2009 awards). The Oronzio de Nora Industrial Electrochemistry Fellowship, sponsored by the Oronzio de Nora Foundation, is the largest, with a $25,000 grant. The ECS Summer Fellowships, five in number, all offer grants of $5,000 each.
