The lab is located in Room A-357, in the "A" level of theFowler Museum of Cultural History at the north end of campus. Withover 650 square feet of space, the lab provides ample work space forstudents and researchers, as well as a number of computers for dataentry and analysis. An intensive laboratory based zooarchaeologycourse is taught every other spring by the lab's director, Dr. ThomasWake. Dr. Wake is available to consult with students, set upvolunteer or independent study projects, and develop researchdesigns, sampling protocols, and evaluate results of interestedinvestigators. One of the most important aspects of anyzooarchaeological laboratory is the modern comparative collectionavailable for use in identification of archaeological faunal remains. The UCLA Zooarchaeology Laboratory maintains an expandingcollection ofover 1200 vertebrate specimensincluding fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. NativeCalifornian species predominate, but domestic, Central American, andPeruvian taxa are well represented. A collection of over 10,000mollusk specimens is currently being cataloged and available for useas well. The UCLA Department of Biology maintains a large collectionof fish skeletons and a large bird and mammal skeletal collection isincluded in the Dickey Natural History Collection. To date the lab has conducted over 200 separateprojects from six continents. Archaeological animal remains have beencollected, identified, and analyzed from the following countries:Belize, Benin, Bolivia, Central African Republic, Denmark, Jordan,Guatemala, Mexico, New Zealand, Panama, Peru, Syria, Turkey, and theUnited States. Within the U.S. most of the collections examined arefrom California, but include Alaska, Arizona, Oregon, Nevada, NewMexico, South Dakota, and Washington. A list of recentpublicationsand reportsis available. Lab directors (left to right): Elsie Sandefur, Susan Colby, Jean Hudson, Tom Wake The lab is currently conducting analysis on anumber of sites in California including several from coastal sitesfrom Camp Pendleton, several desert sites from the Coachella Valleyjust north of the Salton Sea, and Southeast Farallon Island, 26 mileswest of San Francisco. Dr. Wake is currently analyzing verterbatefaunal remains from the Pacific coastal Chiapas, Mexico site of Pasode la Amada with Dr. Richard Lesure. In January of 1998 the lab'sdirector, Dr. Wake, received a grant from the National ScienceFoundation (SBR-9730918) to analyze vertebrate faunal remainsrecovered by Dr. Michael Love from the Pacific coastal site ofUjuxte, Guatemala. In July of 1998 Dr. Wake and Dr. Jeanne Arnoldreceived support from the National Science Foundation (SBR-9806272)to aggressively expand the fish portion of the modern comparativecollection.[an error occurred while processing this directive]
