Abstract

Howard M. HeckerDomestication Revisited: Its Implications for Faunal AnalysisJournal of Field Archaeology 9 (1982) 217--236Faunal analysts are frequently asked to ascertain whether or not aprehistoric population practiced animal domestication. With thisobjective in mind, I applied standard faunal analysis techniques to acollection of over 15,000 bones from the Pre-Pottery Neolithic site ofBeidha in southern Jordan (7,000 to 6,500 B.C.). The results of myanalysis were equivocal, with evidence both for and againstdomestication depending on the criteria selected and the definitionused. In the course of trying to deal with such ambiguity, it becameincreasingly clear that the problem lay not with the data itself, butrather with the conceptualization of the problem. Hence areformulation was necessary that would call attention to the culturaland processual aspect of this human-animal relationship without beingrestricted to the conceptually awkward term "domestication." In thislight I suggest a new term, "cultural control," which allows us thefreedom to consider a whole array of different types of human-animalrelationships without being restricted by arbitrary, preconceivedcategories.Main Author ListingList of IndicesJFA Home PageMaintained by Al B.
